Mindanao is the second largest island in our country, Philippines. Mindanao is also called as Land of Promise. It is divided into six regions, which are further subdivided into 26 provinces. The island is mountainous, it has fresh air, their are many trees and has many tourist attractions. But Mindanao today experience tragic events that there were many people suffered.
"This photo released by the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division shows an aerial view of houses damaged by flash floods caused by Typhoon Pablo in Compostela Valley province on Thursday Dec. 6, 2012. The powerful typhoon that washed away emergency shelters, a military camp and possibly entire families in Mindanao has killed hundreds of people with nearly 400 missing. AP photo"
Last December 2012, Typhoon Pablo struck Mindanao. As I'd saw in the ABS-CBN News, "Typhoon Pablo was the strongest storm to hit Mindanao in two decades". The most affected place were in New Bataan, Compostela Valley and Cateel, Davao Oriental. There were many people killed and missing. Their houses and livelihoods were destroyed by flash floods. And the victims don't have enough food to eat and a clean water to drink.
This month of January 2013, places in Mindanao experience more rain and flash floods because of the tail end of a Cold Front and a Low Pressure Area, according to the weather report of ABS-CBN News. And the largest city in Mindanao, Davao City, experience flash floods and the water is so high that cause many families to evacuate and classes from Kindergarten to High School were cancelled.
Before the same bad things will happen again, we should be ready always. We should stop illegal logging and start planting more trees. We should not throw our garbage anywhere and practice proper garbage disposal and also, stop mining. By doing these, we can prevent flash floods and landslides because trees holds the soil, they absorb water and delaying the release of flood flows. It also helps us to protect our lives from any danger. So, we should care and save our environment.
